How Core Beliefs Create Our Perceptions

Our core beliefs are our most deeply held assumptions about ourselves, the world, and others. They are formed in early childhood, and they shape the way we see the world and ourselves.

Our core beliefs are like filters that we use to interpret our experiences. When we have a negative core belief, we tend to see the world through a negative lens. We may interpret neutral or even positive events in a negative way.

For example, if you have a core belief that you're not good enough, you might interpret a compliment from a friend as a sign that they're just being polite. Or, you might interpret a small mistake at work as a sign that you're a failure.

On the other hand, if you have a positive core belief, you tend to see the world through a positive lens. You may interpret neutral or even negative events in a positive way.

For example, if you have a core belief that you're capable, you might interpret a challenge at work as an opportunity to learn and grow. Or, you might interpret a rejection from a romantic partner as a sign that they weren't the right person for you.

Our core beliefs can have a profound impact on our lives. They can affect our relationships, our careers, and our overall well-being.

How Core Beliefs Are Formed

Our core beliefs are formed in early childhood, based on our experiences and the messages we receive from our parents, teachers, and other important figures in our lives.

For example, if a child is told repeatedly that they're not good enough, they may develop a core belief that they're not good enough. This belief can then shape the way they see themselves and the world around them, and it can lead to a number of negative consequences, such as low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression.

How Core Beliefs Affect Our Perceptions

Our core beliefs affect the way we perceive the world in a number of ways. For example, if we have a core belief that we're not good enough, we may:

  • Selectively attend to information that confirms our belief. For example, we may focus on our mistakes and overlook our successes.

  • Overestimate the likelihood of negative events happening. For example, we may believe that we're going to fail a test, even if we've studied hard.

  • Underestimate our ability to cope with challenges. For example, we may believe that we're not strong enough to handle a difficult situation, even if we have the skills and resources to do so.

How to Challenge Negative Core Beliefs

  • Practicing positive self-talk. One of the best ways to challenge negative core beliefs is to practice positive self-talk. This means talking to yourself in a positive and encouraging way.

  • Surrounding yourself with positive people. The people we surround ourselves with can have a big impact on our beliefs. Make sure you're surrounding yourself with positive people who will support you and help you challenge your negative core beliefs.
